The 4 Types of Underlight

Hello there! In this article, we’ll talk about Underlight! Originally known as Hidden Color in the US, the underlight is a trend in which the hair color is hidden inside, and it can only be seen when the hair is half up or tied to a bun. This makes it a very versatile coloring style as you can have the option to choose to hide it or to show it. Very flexible!

There are different ways that you can play with this coloring style. Such as a traditional dark vs light colors (darker outside, lighter inside for a strong contrast), and the opposite light vs dark colors (lighter outside, darker inside), underlight-highlights combination, and underlight of multiple colors.

For a start, let’s explore the traditional simple ones. The traditional dark vs light colors. For this first type, we will have a darker outer layer base color, usually a darker shade of brown or black with a lighter underlight color on the inside. This will form a very comfortable contrast that looks nice and acceptable.

However, not all colors on the inner layer have to be bright and vibrant colors, you can also do a darker blue. As long as there is an obvious separation of the 2 layers of color, it will form a beautiful underlight. Here are some examples -

Next, we'll explore the second type, underlight with multiple colors. This will be quite interesting as you have more options right now. You can build contrast upon contrast, the inner layer-outer layer is first level of contrast, and the 2 colors on the inner layer will be the second level of contrast.

Multiple options can be explored, such as you can choose to do 2 closely-related colors under the same parent color. For example, 2 shades of blue. Or 2 different but compatible colors, like blue and pink.

And for the third type, it will be a combination between 2 coloring type, the Underlight-Highlights combination. This is a very creative style as you can do the same color for both the highlights and the underlight.

In this example below, the modern thin highlights stripes and the underlight are of the same color, blonde. Blonde is a lovely color if the color was mixed with the intention to create a modern color, one without being too yellowish, with a soft creamy look.

And for our last type, this is the opposite of the first type and is a bold and exciting choice - The light vs dark colors (lighter outside, darker inside). It sounds scary but there is a lot of beauty in this. It doesn't have a be a very bright color, just a tad bit lighter than the inner layer.

It's like an extension of a full length color, imagine a full length color, say, an ash pink, but how to level up this ash pink is by adding another color on the inside that will compliment the ash pink color. Very creative! Here are the examples -
